Joe O'Callaghan

Joe O'Callaghan

Joe has been windsurfing from before he was born - until the bump got in the way! He progressed to being towed along behind his Mum and Dad's windsurfers, and then to being towed far out to sea on his famous mini-Bic. By the age of 7 he was quoted as ‘the best mini-Bic sailor in the World' - who else would do rail-rides and pirouettes with a 1.4m sail! He was nicknamed Lego-man because of his green helmet.

Joe's success with freestyle started from the age of 7; he won several junior Longboard freestyle competitions. By the age of 12 he had overtaken his Dad - then the RYA freestyle instructor trainer! His winning trick is the pirouette on the rail. Joe has now transferred his tricks to his shortboard and is trying to crack more and more manoeuvres. His early longboard skills certainly helps when the winds are down and the other short boarders are left waiting for the wind.

Racing began when he was 9 on the 3.2m JOD, and he is now a member of the RYA National IMCO 6.6 Squad. Joe has had a really successful 2003 - winning 4, and drawing on 1 of the 5 UKWA series event that he has attended.
