Tim Gibson
I would like to claim that I was born on the water but it's not quite true. I was introduced to sailing at the age of two when my Dad sold up, bought a boat and sailed us to Spain to enjoy the good life for a couple of years. However, I only gained competence when I started windsurfing at 13. I almost lived at my local club and was racing within a year. The budget was tight, my parents bought my first real raceboard and race sail for my second race season. I worked at my local club and spent my savings to pay for everything else. Kids of today don't know they're born, when I were a lad, etc, etc.
I started instructing at 15, gained my RYA qualifications at 19 and am still instructing freelance at Carsington. From '93 to '98, education and an obsession with classic cars kept me away from racing. The break from competition had certainly rusted the skills and I found myself at the back of the regional fleet. Persistence paid off eventually and I took my first national event win at Poole Windfest in 2001. My most treasured result is winning the much coveted Laura Ashley Trophy on my 17th attempt at the Rutland Marathon in 2006.
