The Robert Cartwright Memorial Trophy

Past Winners

Richard Hamilton, Paul Sibley, Beth Williamson, Finlay Forster-Davies, Izzy Hamilton, Lindsay Smith, Matt Brown, Adam Purcell, Max Bushell

The Robert Cartwright memorial trophy will be presented during prize giving on Sunday afternoon. For those of you to young to have known Robert, below is a short paragraph explaining why this trophy is so important to The RYA, The UKWA and to everyone involved in windsurfing today, in the past and in the future.

Robert Cartwright

Robert Cartwright was a young Windsurfer (aged 12) who was a member of the RYA West Zone Windsurfing Squad, coached by Helen Cartwright & Ian Roberts.  His older sister Sarah had been a member of the RYA National Youth Squad and was also a talented sailor.  Robert loved Windsurfing and could always be seen with a smile on his face, going as fast as he possibly could and 'normally' in the right direction!

He was a fantastic squad member, was friends with all of the other sailors in the squad and regarded as 'a joy to coach'.  Whilst not always winning every competition, he would always enjoy himself and never gave-up, finishing virtually every race he entered.

It was on the way home from an RYA Zone Squad Windsurfing event that Robert was tragically killed, along with his father Phil, when their car was involved in a head on collision.  Roberts mother Pat was seriously injured and has made a remarkable recovery.  Sarah, Robert's sister who was also injured, has continued to be involved in the sport of Windsurfing and coaches the up and coming youngsters of today.

The Robert Cartwright Memorial Trophy is a fitting tribute to his memory, being presented to a Windsurfer who the Selectors (namely Sarah and Pat), feel personifies what Windsurfing meant to Robert.  Essentially these values were fun, enthusiasm, commitment and passion

About The Academy

WPNSA officially opened on 1st April 2000, with residence taken up in the converted ex-naval offices, whilst the plans for the new Academy were taking shape.

The clubhouse was opened officially in June 2005 and includes 30 pontoons, new slipways and much expanded room for boat storage and car parking.

The academy has excellent shower, toilet and changing facilities. In addition there is a cafe style restaurant with free wi-fi including use of two computers. A viewing deck overlooks the harbour.

There is no grass for rigging and although large carpet mats have been installed these soon get full so a rigging mat is always a good idea.

The slipways at Weymouth are generally extreamly slippy, so extra care should always be taken especially at low water.
