RYA support for Formula Youth and Senior 2007
3 October 2006
Background
The RYA Senior and Youth National Formula Squads were originally introduced to nurture potential talent in order to position Great Britain in a strong position internationally with regards to the 2008 Olympic Windsurfing Equipment Decision. In 2006 ISAF announced that the RS:X was the chosen equipment for the 2008 Olympic Games and the International Windsurfing pathway subsequently gained clarity and direction.
2007
As a consequence of the ISAF decision, in 2006 the RYA pathway was in a position to formalise and restructure taking into account the new Olympic equipment. There no longer exists a need for the Formula Senior or Formula Youth classes to form part of the RYA pathway and as such the RYA will no longer be running National squads in these classes. Formula Youth will remain as a ‘recognised' class, acknowledging the important role the class plays in progressing and developing talented young sailors and as such will benefit from grant support to assist and encourage sailors to attend international regattas.
